A former prison officer has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after engaging in a relationship with a convicted murderer while working at a maximum-security jail.
Rebecca Green, 29, began the relationship with inmate John Otugade in October 2022 while employed at HMP Whitemoor, according to Cambridgeshire Police.
Otugade is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years after being convicted in 2012 of murdering a nightclub bouncer in London.
Concerns about Green's conduct emerged in the spring of 2023, prompting an investigation. During the inquiry, Otugade was transferred to HMP Belmarsh in south-east London.
Detectives searched Green's vehicle and seized her mobile phone, where they discovered messages indicating she was involved in a relationship with the inmate, police said.
Investigators also found that a phone number listed under the name "partner" on Otugade's approved prison contact list matched Green's mobile number.
Green admitted misconduct in a public office at an earlier court hearing.
She was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on 24 June to one year and four months behind bars.
Detective Constable Tom Adams, who led the investigation, described Green's actions as a serious breach of her duties, saying prison officers have a responsibility to protect both staff and inmates. He added that her conduct jeopardised the security of the prison and undermined the work of her colleagues.
