A quiet Monday night in East St. Louis, Illinois, turned into a scene straight out of a horror movie after a person dressed as a clown appeared outside a home shortly before an elderly man was found fatally stabbed nearby.

Illinois State Police announced that a 15-year-old boy has been taken into custody in connection with the death of John Wesley Allen Sr., 78, who was discovered with multiple stab wounds.

The incident began at approximately 9:11 p.m. when a home’s doorbell camera captured a person wearing a clown costume, a mask, and glasses approaching the front porch.

The individual walked directly toward the camera, stared into the lens, and quietly whispered:

“I was looking for you.”

The person then calmly left the porch and moved toward the back of the house. At the time, a woman was home alone. Her son, Lee Palmer, said the individual remained around the property for several minutes, leaving the family frightened and wondering why their home had been specifically targeted.

Less than an hour later, at around 10:02 p.m., police responded to reports of a person lying in the roadway near the intersection of North 76th Street and State Street in East St. Louis.

Officers found John Wesley Allen Sr. at the scene. The St. Clair County Coroner later confirmed that he had died from multiple stab wounds.

Investigators began reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area. The following day, authorities identified and detained a 15-year-old suspect at a residence as the investigation continued.

Illinois State Police said videos showing the suspect wearing the clown costume quickly spread across social media. Detectives are collecting all available surveillance footage to track the suspect’s movements before and after the crime.

Some local residents reported seeing a person dressed as a clown walking between homes and looking through windows. However, authorities have not yet released a complete timeline of events, identified the weapon involved, or disclosed the evidence directly linking the teenager to the crime scene.

Police have also not revealed whether the suspect knew the victim or whether John Wesley Allen Sr. was the person the suspect was allegedly “looking for” when he appeared on the doorbell camera. It also remains unclear whether the house seen in the footage had any connection to the victim.

It is important to note that the doorbell camera footage does not show the stabbing itself. It only captures the suspect outside a nearby home shortly before the victim was found. The teenager’s involvement remains an allegation under investigation, and no final court ruling has been issued.

Authorities have not determined a motive for the killing or explained why the suspect was dressed as a clown. Detectives continue gathering surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together what happened during the critical minutes between the suspect’s appearance at the home and the discovery of the victim.
